▪ Overview
Co-hosted by the ROK Navy, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the Agency for Defense Development, the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality, and the Society of Naval Architects of Korea, the 2019 Naval Ship Technology & Weapon System Seminar was held at BEXCO, Busan, for two days from October 23 (Wed.) to October 24 (Thu.). This seminar provided an occasion for presenting R&D achievements made by relevant organizations in advancing naval ship technology and marine weapon systems. Around 400 domestic and international experts in naval ship technology and weapon systems from the navy, universities, research institutes, related industries, and government organizations participated, discussing new technologies and engaging in academic exchange.

▪ Details
This seminar is held biannually, and this year more than 100 papers were presented in six subfields, namely, (a) naval ship design, (b) integrated survivability, (c) payload/combat systems, (d) marine weapon systems & the Fourth Industrial Revolution, (e) stealth, and (f) international sessions. The first day began with an opening address by Chief of Naval Operations Seung-seob Sim. Then, prizes were awarded to three outstanding papers selected for their technological and academic contributions to the field of naval ship technology and marine weapons. This was followed by keynote lectures delivered by Dr. Sung Eun Lee (Agency for Defense Development), Dr. Seo Yong-Seok (Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology), Dr. Wang-Gu Kang (Korea Aerospace Research Institute), and Captain Eung-rok Kim (Planning & Management Dept., ROK Navy Headquarters) (see Table 1). On the second day, 20 papers were presented in the subfield of naval ship design/construction/operation and maintenance technologies, 19 papers in the subfield of naval ship integrated survivability/damage control/special capabilities, 21 papers in the subfield of naval ship payload/combat system/equipment technologies, 22 papers in the subfield of marine weapon systems/unmanned maritime systems/Fourth Industrial Revolution, 8 papers in the stealth subfield, and 10 papers in the subfield of defense strategies and development of weapon systems by domestic and foreign defense companies. The subfield on Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies for implementing the “smart battleship” program promoted by the ROK Navy was included for the first time in this year’s seminar. Furthermore, the seminar was held at the same time and place as the 2019 International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX), thus providing many attractions for attendees, publicizing Korea’s outstanding marine defense technologies, and raising the status of SNAK and the ROK Navy as pioneers in the development of smart naval ship technologies and marine weapon systems.
