[Research Committee News] Ship Production Technology Research

 ▪ 2019 Fall Colloquium
The 2019 Ship Production Technology Research Committee Fall Colloquium was successfully held at the Mokpo National University’s New Ocean Industrial Complex Campus for two days from November 28 (Thu.) to November 29 (Fri.). The colloquium was attended by 80 representatives from industries, universities, and research institutes working in the field of ship and marine production technologies in Korea. A total of 36 papers were presented in five subfields (production system, manufacturing technology, automation, welding, and painting), and there were also technological exchanges and lively sharing of information between participating members. Moreover, on the second day, discussion on the smart factory took place in each subfield.
In particular, Professor Jong Gye Shin from the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Seoul National University, delivered a special invited lecture titled “Taking Up the Challenge to Develop the Next-Generation Shipyard: 27 Years of Education and Research in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering”. This special lecture was organized by the Ship Production Technology Research Committee to honor Professor Shin’s achievements in education and research in the field of ship and marine production technologies, on the occasion of his approaching retirement in February 2020. In his lecture, Professor Shin remarked, “The conditions more than 30 years ago when I first began teaching production technologies and the conditions now in 2019 are similar.” He noted the need for developing production technologies that are increasingly more connected, autonomous, and intelligent in order to advance Korea’s shipbuilding and marine industry, and this observation struck a deep chord among the attendees. After the special lecture, Professor Shin was presented with a plaque expressing the appreciation of members of the Ship Production Technology Research Committee.
