[Research Committee News] Arctic Technology Research Committee

The 9th Winter Research Colloquium of the Arctic Technology Research Committee was successfully held at the External Cooperation Hall, Dorim Campus, Mokpo National University, on February 14 (Thu.) and 15 (Fri.), 2019. More specifically, this winter research colloquium began with three special sessions which introduced the results of research on offshore plants in polar regions conducted via industry-university-institute collaborations, as well as shared research activities in the north and south polar regions, updates on the re-planned construction of the second icebreaking research vessel, and research findings on polar engineering. This colloquium consisted of 18 research papers presented over the course of two days and provided the occasion for a lively exchange of information and technology among the participants.

In addition, the 11th Steering Committee Meeting of the Arctic Technology Research Committee was held. This meeting featured a financial report for the research committee, an announcement of the venue for the next colloquium (Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering, Daejeon), a report on projects related to the polar regions, and discussion on the need to plan new research projects pertaining to the polar regions. Because most of the current research projects that are being conducted with government support will be concluded in the next two to three years, the need to plan new projects is gradually being emphasized. It is expected that members of the Arctic Technology Research Committee will play an indispensable role at this stage when the importance of R&D planning for the identification of promising next-generation projects related to the polar regions has come to the fore.
