[Research Committee News] Naval Ship Technology Committee

The 2022 Naval Ship Technology Committee Seminar jointly hosted by the Republic of Korea Navy, Defense Acquisition Program Administration, Agency for Defense Development, Defense Agency for Technology and Quality, The Society of Naval Architects of Korea, and Seoul National University was held on Wednesday, July 13 and Thursday, July 14 at the Seoul National University Global Engineering Education Center. Industry, academia, research, and military ship technology and maritime weapons experts from the Navy, universities, research institutes, industries, and government agencies attended to discuss technology for applying advanced science and technology to ships, which are the center of naval combat power, and exchanged academic issues.

 

At this seminar, 90 papers were presented in five categories, including design and construction of surface ships and submarines, integrated survivability of ships, maritime weapons, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and future ship technology. In addition, awards were given to the authors of seven excellent papers selected by evaluating technological development and academic contribution in the field of ship technology.

 

Day 2 events consisted of thesis presentations on surface ship design/construction/operation maintenance/acquisition system (20 papers), submarine design/building/sonar/combat system (20 papers), ship integrated survivability/damage control/special performance (20 papers), maritime weapons and unmanned systems/equipment technology (20 papers), Fourth Industrial Revolution/future trap technology (10 papers), and a panel discussion on “Strategy for Strengthening the Competitiveness of the Naval Vessel Industry” where participants from the industry, academia, research, and military related to the naval vessel industry attended.

 

Even in the COVID-19 pandemic situation, many experts participated and interacted for the construction of a strong maritime force based on advanced science and technology. Under the theme of “The 50-Year History of Shipbuilding in the Republic of Korea,” photos and models of ships by period were exhibited together to publicize Korea's excellent maritime defense technology and enhance the status of the Korean Navy and The Society of Naval Architects of Korea, which lead the development of ship technology.
