[Research Committee News] Korea Towing Tank Conference (KTTC)

The Korea Towing Tank Conference (KTTC) held an autumn workshop at the Siheung R&D Center of the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Central Research Institute on October 20 and 21, 2022. The workshop was attended by 48 registrants from universities, research institutes, and industries, and ten research results in the fields of resistance propulsion, marine engineering, and inner port control were presented. On the first day of the workshop, an award ceremony for this year's Experimental Fluid Mechanics Contest was held to encourage the winners. This workshop, which was held face to face following the spring workshop, became a meaningful event that strengthened friendships among the fellow researchers along with heated discussions.

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering’s Siheung R&D Center for Advanced Research Center, which hosted this workshop, built test facilities such as a common tank and an acoustic tank in turn following the completion of the towing tank at the end of 2018, and celebrated the production of the 100th towing tank model ship in October this year. Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering’s Advanced Research Center Director Dong-gyu Choi, Seoul National University Professor Yong-hwan Kim (technical advisor for Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering), and Professor Shin-hyung Rhee (President of The Society of Naval Architects of Korea) attended and encouraged several researchers who worked hard to build the latest research facilities.

At the 2nd Steering Committee in 2022 held right before the autumn workshop, it was decided to promote the (tentative name) KTTC Archive construction project to organize the past activities of the Korea Towing Tank Conference for about 50 years and promote future development. Through this, it is expected to be able to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of The Society of Naval Architects of Korea and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Seoul National University's gravity tank, the first test tank in Korea.

This research group is scheduled to hold a spring workshop (Samsung Heavy Industries Daedeok Research Center) in April next year to help with the continuous development of experimental fluid dynamics and exchanges among researchers.
