The 17th Arctic Technology Research Committee’s Summer Research Meeting was held face to face for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic at the Busan Port International Exhibition and Convention Center (BPEX) from Thursday, August 18 to Friday, August 19, and about 40 members from the industry, academia, and research attended. First, at the opening ceremony, there were welcome and congratulatory remarks by Hyun-soo Kim , the new president of the Arctic Technology Research Committee, followed by congratulatory remarks by Sung-ho Kang , Director of the Korea Polar Research Institute, and Shin-hyung Rhee, President  of The Society of Naval Architects of Korea. The program consisted of six special sessions and two general sessions, providing an opportunity to share research results.

Because of the prospect of the recent prolonged Russia-Ukraine crisis and the crisis in the balance of power between the West and Russia in the Arctic Ocean, the Arctic development strategy and related projects to advance into the Arctic seem to be somewhat reduced. However, the Arctic is still an important strategic point in terms of resource development and logistics transportation. Therefore, the Artic Technology Research Committee will continue to make great efforts to play a leading role in the center of domestic polar research by setting goals and directions to be pursued in the future in terms of “sustainable development and cooperative governance of the Arctic.”
