[Trends in the Shipbuilding Industry and R&BD] KRISO Develops Super-Large Floating Offshore Wind Power Platform

Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) obtained AIP (approval in principle) certification from Korean Register for the 15 MW (megawatt) floating offshore wind farm.

This AIP certification is significant in that it is the design certification of a 15 MW floating offshore wind power platform developed for the first time in Korea in line with the trend of large-scale wind turbines and conversion to floating type. AIP is a step to verify the validity of the stability and performance of the development target for the concept and basic design, and it is a procedure for obtaining official certification for related technologies.

The floating offshore wind power platform refers to substructures and mooring systems that support offshore wind turbines floating in the distant sea. In order to generate electricity by floating a wind turbine on the sea, it is essential to secure a highly stable platform. Although leading overseas turbine companies are already introducing large 15 MW wind turbines, there has not been a large platform suitable for this in Korea.

The 15 MW floating offshore wind power platform was developed in collaboration with KRISO and Front Energies (FE), an engineering company specializing in offshore structures, and the performance verification of the platform was completed through concept design, basic design, and model tests.

The platform developed by KRISO not only enables stable power generation even in high waves at sea, but also relatively easily realizes a series of processes from manufacturing to transportation and installation in accordance with the domestic production yard environment. In particular, since large dedicated installation lines are not required during the installation process, cost reduction effects are expected as well as shortening the installation period.
