Event Overview

The 2022 General Meeting and Annual Autumn Conference of The Society of Naval Architects of Korea were successfully held at the Changwon Convention Center from November 9 to 11 in a completely different atmosphere unlike that of last year during COVID-19. In particular, this academic conference was accompanied by a commemorative event to mark the 70th anniversary of the The Society of Naval Architects of Korea.

At the conference, 95 general session papers and 87 special session papers were presented. A total of 209 research contents, including 27 posters, were presented, resulting in relatively rich academic exchange. An invited lecture titled “The future of the shipbuilding and maritime industry and human resource development” by Ho-hwan Chun, President of Tongmyong University, was also given with the great interest of many members. In addition, there were awards and presentations for the Student Ship Design Contest, Autonomous Boat Contest, and KTTC Experimental Fluid Mechanics Contest, and on the evening of November 10, the Young NAOE Open Talk event was held for the future generation of the society and the shipbuilding and marine industry. As a result, students majoring in shipbuilding and marine engineering were able to participate actively in the society and share their opinions.

70th Anniversary Celebration

The Society of Naval Architects of Korea, which celebrated its 70th anniversary this year, held an event to commemorate the anniversary and reward the many members who contributed to the development of the society. President Shin-hyung Rhee, the current president of the society, gave a commemorative address, once again emphasizing the status of the society by stating, “It will be a valuable occasion to raise the status of our society, which boasts a history of 70 years, to the fullest, and the efforts of our society, which leads the world in the field of shipbuilding and marine engineering through ecofriendliness, digitization, and decentralization. The efforts and achievements of our members and the society will be introduced.” In addition, a retrospective by former chairman Hyo-chul Kim and a congratulatory speech by Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Seung-hwan Cho followed.

The highlight of the 70th anniversary event was the contribution award ceremony. In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the society, achievement awards were given to senior members who have served for more than 40 years, members who have served as executives for more than three terms, members who have contributed to the development of branches and research groups, and members of international conferences and organizations. Through this event, we were able to confirm once again the contributions of numerous members to the 70th anniversary. It was also a time to solidify our determination to make it an opportunity to take a new leap forward with the shipbuilding and marine industry until the day of the 70th, 80th, and 100th anniversaries.

Academic Conference

A two-day academic conference was held from November 10, the day after the 70th anniversary event, to November 11. In a total of ten presentations, the latest research technologies were introduced by various themes covering all fields of shipbuilding and maritime affairs.

In the invited lecture, Ho-hwan Chun, President of Tongmyong University, gave a presentation titled “The future of the shipbuilding and maritime industry and human resource development.” The need for technology such as digitization and decarbonization of the shipbuilding and maritime industry and the current sense of crisis due to severe population decline were also emphasized. In addition, the usual educational philosophy on how to nurture talented people was expressed in the term, “Do-ing” university.

As separate sessions, on the morning of Friday, November 11, two sessions for the Student Ship Design Contest and one session for the Autonomous Boat Competition were held. The teams that received an award for the Student Ship Design Contest participated, and presentations by nine teams for designated assignments and nine teams for free assignments were introduced. For the Autonomous Boat Competition, Korea Maritime and Ocean University, which won the comprehensive award, as well as Pukyong National University and Inha University, unveiled the various technologies and know-how they accumulated while participating in the competition. In addition, posters of the winners of the competition were exhibited in the lobby on the third floor and received a great response.

General Meeting

The 53rd General Meeting was held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 10 and lasted for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Starting with the opening remarks by Shin-hyung Rhee, President of the society, the presentation of academic awards and special prizes continued.

About 200 university students and graduate students majoring in shipbuilding and marine engineering attended this event, which was moderated by members Seok-joo Chung (Executive Director, Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association) and Jae-yong Lee (Professor, Dongeui University). Networking and job information exchange with experts from shipyards and research institutes were actively carried out at this event, with the purpose of instilling pride as a shipbuilding and marine engineering student and discovering talents that will lead the future shipbuilding and maritime industry. Dr. Tae-gi Min's lecture introduced the book Fanta Ray (The History of Fluid Science of Revolution and Romance) and explained the development of the Western science history, awakening interest as an engineer in mechanics theories and formulas through various discoveries and inventions.

Meanwhile, awards for the Student Ship Design Contest and the KTTC Experimental Fluid Mechanics Contest were also presented. The 319K VLCC design (including ecofriendly equipment) and the concept design of a 20,000 CBM next-generation hydrogen carrier were presented as the designated task and free task, respectively, for the 31st Student Ship Design Contest, and the grand prize was awarded to both Kyungnam University and University of Ulsan.

Closing Remarks

This year announced the revival of the shipbuilding and marine industry with the news of successive orders. In addition, at a time when the global crisis of COVID-19 is being overcome to some extent, the 70th anniversary commemoration ceremony, Autumn conference, and General Meeting were livelier than ever. A variety of programs were organized for undergraduate and graduate students, research institutes, and companies to participate in, the latest research technologies were presented, and heated discussions were held in various places, confirming the reflection that the society had become more active.

We express our gratitude to all the members who worked hard behind the scenes to complete the 70th anniversary celebration event, academic conference, and general meeting successfully. In addition, we would like to wrap up the event report by expressing our gratitude to the members of the organization and those involved in the event who supported the event despite difficult circumstances.
