[SNAK News] 2021 SNAK General Meeting and Annual Autumn Conference

The Society of Naval Architects of Korea (SNAK) held the 2021 General Meeting and Annual Autumn Conference at the Gunsan Saemangeum Convention Center (GSCO) in Gunsan-si, Jeollabuk-do, for two days from November 4 (Thursday) to 5 (Friday), 2021. The general meeting and conference were held with the sponsorship of Jeollabuk-do, Gunsan-si, the Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association (KOSHIPA), and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), and we take this opportunity to appreciate their kind generosity.

The conference consisted of 119 presentations in 31 general sessions and 68 presentations in 18 planning sessions in total. Moreover, four special sessions composed of a special lecture on the theme of "New Changes in the Shipbuilding and Marine Industries" a technology seminar on "The Trend of the Technical Development of Electric Propulsion Systems for Ships", a ship design contest and the Korea Autonomous Boat Competition (KABOAT) poster session, and other various programs planned to promote the active academic activities of undergraduate students such as "Young NAOE open talk" were held during the conference. On top of that, the Special Investigation Commission on Social Disasters released its recent investigation result during the session on the "Investigative Result Report on the Cause of the MV Sewol Sinking," and held an open forum. Because of the recent COVID-19 pandemic that posed a challenge worldwide, the thorough and strict preventive measures at offline sites as well as the online operational plans were prepared to make this conference safe and successful.

On November 4 (Thursday), the first day's schedule started at the eight seminar rooms and two convention halls of GSCO. Social distancing was strictly implemented because of the current COVID-19 situation and, in case that the rooms are already full, other convention halls were additionally prepared to let the participants join online. Every session was broadcasted through ZOOM. Most of the speakers made presentations at the venue, but some presentations were presented online.

Because there were various programs and more presentations compared to last year, the general events such as the award ceremony and the conference were also held at the convention hall while the general, planning, and special sessions were held.

General events started with the planned sessions and general sessions, an opening ceremony, and a special lecture. In total, 31 general sessions, 18 planned sessions, and for the special sessions, two ship design contest sessions and two KABOAT sessions were held. The opening ceremony was followed by a special lecture by Park Sunggu, North East Asia President, Lloyd's Register, on the theme of "New Changes in the Shipbuilding and Marine Industries." The host, Chun Kangwoo, Director of Green Technology Department, Korean Register, proceeded with the technology seminar with an expert on November 5 (Friday). Six presentations on the theme of "The Trend on the Technical Development of Electric Propulsion Systems for Ships" were conducted, and information on the latest electric propulsion system for ships such as electric propulsion system, hybrid propulsion system, battery system, classification regulation, and ferries, were shared with the audience.

There were 119 oral presentations in 31 general sessions and, the poster session, which reopened last year, was cancelled due to the lack of submission. With this, the number of oral presentations and sessions to release had increased more than the last Autumn Conference.

In order to supplement the abstract-only submission with confidentiality issue, the receipt procedures were changed to accept extended abstracts to improve the quality since last year. However, some were still found problematic since it is not compulsory. Hence further improvements should be implemented in the future.

The number of presentations on the theme of hydrodynamic performance had increased from last year, and so were those in the other fields. It is notable that the number of those who researched on automation and deep learning was increasing steadily. It turned out that presentations pertaining to autonomous ships has boomed up since last year, and the fields of design, regulation, production, and equipment system had paid attention to the said automation and deep-learning researches. This was a reflection of the latest technological ecosystem's changes, and such trends, which were mostly based on eco-friendly and autonomous ships, were shown in the planning sessions. In addition, the two new special sessions about the Autonomous Boat Competition (KABAOT) were held, which informed us that there has been a keen interest, relevant studies, human resources training on autonomous ships from our members.

The abovementioned special sessions proceeded with the two of ship design contests and KABOAT on the second day. The participants were the teams who won a prize at the ship design contest, and the sessions progressed through nine presentations of designated projects and six free projects. The results were exhibited through posters during the conference at the lobby on the 1st floor of GSCO. In the case of KABOAT, ten teams who won a prize were divided into two sessions, and they presented the accomplished results of the 2nd Competition. In light of the fact that most participants were undergraduate students, the presentations were supplemented well by their respectable technical skills, and the development and utilization of sensors and the algorithms applicable for autonomous systems, in particular, showed us how much effort they had exerted into it and how many achievements they had accomplished.

General and academic sessions were started with an opening ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on the first day. The opening remark was made by President Kim Hyunsoo, followed by the welcome remarks from Shin Yeongdae, Member of the National Assembly; Song Hajin, Governor of Jeollabuk-do; and Kang Imjoon, Mayor of Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do; and the congratulatory remarks from Ka Samhyun, CEO of Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd.

Subsequently, there were academic awards and special prizes given. Prof. Kim Moonchan (Pusan National University) won the academic award, and Mr. Lee Hanjin (Researcher, the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering [KRISO]) won the technology award.

The 52nd General Meeting was held at a convention hall at 5:00 p.m. on November 4 (Thursday). With the Trustee of Director Jung Kwanghyo (Professor, Pusan National University), President Kim Hyunsoo's annual report started the General Meeting (Fig. 12). The briefing on the accounting, project, and financial status by directors was proceeded, and then the draft project and budget plans for 2022 were reviewed and authorized by members. On top of that, the revision on the articles of association were reviewed following the election of the next President and auditor.

Meanwhile, the "Young NAOE Open Talk," which is to promote the amity and discuss with HR managers of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Korean Register of Shipping (KR), Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI); undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of shipbuilding and marine engineering; and young employees from shipbuilding companies, was held with the Director of Technology, Lee Jaeyong (Dong-Eui University), as the moderator at 10:00 a.m. on the second day. The event included seminars for undergraduate students, which covered such issues as the current shipbuilding circumstances, the prospects, and information sharing about employment and office life. The seminars were organized to guide the students with career planning and to encourage them to lead the shipbuilding industry in the future. Hence the students found the seminars greatly helpful. The conference expected active participation of undergraduate students, but it turned out that the majority were those who participated in the ship design contest and KABOAT. This makes us therefore aware that further measures to attract more undergraduate students should be planned.

Lastly, the Special Investigation Commission on Social Disasters gave the presentation on the "Investigative Results on the Cause of the MV Sewol Sinking" during the last session on the second day. Because of the keen interest of the media, the session presented the research results that are limited to the technical issues, and many SNAK members participated to discuss and review the cause of sinking from the technical aspects.

Even though the current COVID-19 pandemic was raised to a national threat level, the 2021 Autumn Conference proved that the heat from the academic activities to prepare the future of shipbuilding and marine industries is blazing. SNAK has been steadily contributing to having the spectrum wide enough to encompass not only undergraduate students but also researchers by boosting the academic activities through the Annual Autumn Conference and expanding the foundation of shipbuilding and marine industries. We wanted to put such academic activity results that had been achieved in the meantime into this conference, and it turned out as a remarkable success. On top of that, the active participation from members and the know-how, which has been gained since last year to operate the conference with online and offline managements for social distancing, enabled us to successfully finish this year's Autumn Conference, despite the current COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Thus, we truly appreciate every member of SNAK, who exerted their utmost efforts for the academic development of shipbuilding and marine industries by participating in the conference, and we give our words of encouragement to every student in the field of shipbuilding and marine engineering throughout the nation, who participated in various educational programs planned by SNAK.

We once again take this opportunity to truly appreciate every member company and stakeholder who supported this Autumn Conference under the current difficult situations.
