1. Arctic Technology Research Committee

1.1 The 11th Summer Research Presentation of Arctic Technology Research Committee

The 11th Summer Research Presentation of Arctic Technology Research Committee held an online (Webinar) meeting on August 25th (Tuesday). This was the first time to have a virtual meeting, and with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic it was unlike the past face-to-face meetings. This meeting was a great success, attended by a lot of participants with the special focus on the New Normal of the post-corona era where we will see a lot of changes. At the outset, Kyung-sik Choi, the president of Arctic Technology Research Committee, delivered opening remarks, followed by welcoming remarks from Prof. Hyun-soo Kim, the president of the Society of Naval Architects of Korea, and four special sessions and two general sessions for sharing results of projects in the field of polar research.

The first lecture of the special session was provided by Dr. Jung-yong Wang of NRC-OCRE (Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering Research Center), located in Newfoundland, Canada. He introduced polar research projects currently conducted by the center including those on the ice-sea vessel, polar marine construction, and diverse modeling trials using ice-sea water tanks. He explained that it was supposed to conduct an actual ship test on ice performance using the Canadian icebreaker "Henry Larsen" at the North Sea in Canada for the second half of this year. However, the test was postponed to next year due to COVID-19. In addition, he introduced a plan for a $50 million research project that will be implemented for seven years from 2020. Part of the budget is allocated for an exchange student program which attracted a high interest from student members during the meeting.

For the second lecture, Dr. Kyung Jin from the Korea Polar Research Institute made a presentation on the impact of global warming on collapse of Thwaites Glacier in the West Antarctica and global sea level rise and their mechanisms. The research has a particular importance as the journal "Nature Science" selected the issue as the research topic for the year 2019. For this, the institute plans to explain the major physical mechanisms of glacier collapse, forecast the collapsing time, measure the ice mass loss, and conduct research on predicting global sea level rise in the future by 2100.

In addition, for the 3rd special session, Ji-hye Kim, researcher from the Korea Maritime Institute, explained the Arctic shipping normative system, major discussion points of IMO Polar Code, and Korea's responsive actions to the changing norms under the topic "trend and outlook of  Arctic shipping norms." During the last lecture of the special session, Jung-hoon Kim, the head of Korea-Siberia Center of Pai Chai University, provided detailed explanation on the "Blue Growth" in connection with the Russian Artic Circle and the ways for Korea to participate in the North Pole Route, under the topic "eight major locations for Russian Arctic Circle development." The special sessions were followed by general sessions which were divided into the two fields, polar science and polar engineering. A total of six academic papers were presented with participation of the members to provide a great opportunity for active sharing of technology and information.

1.2 The 13th Steering Session of Arctic Technology Research Committee

The 13th Steering Session was held during the period of joint conference with the Korean Association of Ocean Science and Technology Societies (KAOSTS). Attended by Kyung-sik Choi, the president of Arctic Technology Research Committee, Sung-ho Gang, vice president of the Committee, two executive chiefs, and 39 steering members (including substitutes). The session's agenda includes selection of the next president, briefings on committee operation and management, and the plan for operating the summer research presentation.

The issue on consecutive appointment of President Kyung-sik Choi was decided by all the members of the committee. Accordingly, he will fill the president position for the following two years. For the next, there was a briefing on recent updates of members of the steering committee. The vice presidents, Prof. Hyun-soo Kim and Dr. Sung-ho Kang were appointed as the new president of the Society of Naval Architects of Korea and the assistant director of the Korea Polar Research Institute. Hearing the sad news of Prof. Don-chul Lee of Mokpo National Maritime University who passed away due to a chronic ailment, the members prayed for the repose of the deceased during the session. For the financial report of the committee, they passed the accounting statement and the statement of audit without objections. In addition, it was proposed to hold the summer research presentation this year online (Webinar). Since it will not be a face-to-face meeting, it was suggested to organize the meetings with more share of special sessions, in order to enhance the participants’ concentration. Given the cost-saving online meeting, the registration fee for this year was set at KRW 30,000 reduced from the past KRW 70,000.
