[SNAK News] 2019 SNAK General Meeting and Annual Autumn Conference

1. Conference Overview
The 2019 General Meeting and Annual Autumn Academic Conference of the Society of Naval Architects of Korea (SNAK) was held at the Hwabaek International Convention Center, Gyeongju, from October 24 (Thu.) to October 25 (Fri.), 2019. This event was sponsored by the Gyeongju Hwabaek Convention and Visitors Bureau, Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies, and the appreciations are extended to those sponsorship. In the Annual Autumn Academic Conference, around 130 papers were presented in 28 sessions. In addition, 12 planned sessions, three special sessions, and a Korean-Japanese joint session were held. The conference was a great success, with about 500 SNAK members and students participating. 

2. Conference Details
2.1 Annual Autumn Conference
The Annual Autumn Academic Conference took place in 10 seminar rooms and the Convention Hall at the Hwabaek International Convention Center, Gyeongju, from 12:00 PM on the first day to 3:00 PM on the following day. It consisted of a total of 28 regular sessions, 12 planned sessions, a Korean-Japanese joint session, two student ship design contests, and one session on a contest involving maritime autonomous surface ships.
The Korean-Japanese Joint Session was on the theme “Big Data from Actual Seas”, chaired by International Director In-won Lee. Four members of the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers participated, including Vice-President Hashimoto (Professor, Nagasaki University), presenting on “Improvement of Statistical Shaft Power Analysis Considered by Data Consistency and Unevenness”, “Estimation of Roll Motion in Irregular Seas with Use of Stochastic Theory”, and “A Simple Prediction Method of Irregular Waves for Choosing a Control Parameter of a Wave Energy Converter System”. From SNAK, members affiliated with Samsung Heavy Industries, Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering, and Inha University participated, presenting on “Characteristics of Full Scale Thrust Measurement during Speed Trial”, “Performance Analysis of Ships in Operation”, and “Prediction of Ship Resistance in Level Ice Using Artificial Neural Network”.

On the first day, there was a special lecture moderated by Vice-President Jin Kim. Lloyd’s Register Asia’s Jin-Tae Lee, Chief Representative and Marine Manager for Korea, presented on “Digitalization & Decarbonization – What Does This Mean for the Marine Industry?”
 

 
<Special Lecture>

 

 A total of 126 papers were presented in the general sessions, and the papers presented in each field are as shown in Table 1. The table shows that findings in various fields were presented, with papers in “hydrodynamic performance” and “structural performance and materials” prevailing. The greatest number of papers were on “commercial vessels”, followed by papers on “special vessels/other”, and “offshore structures”.  Classification

After the General Meeting, there was a banquet presided by Managing Director Man-Sub Lee of Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, with a welcome address by President Dae-Seung Cho. The banquet atmosphere become enriched by the performance of a string quartet from the University of Ulsan. As in last year’s autumn conference, this year’s conference also included the 2019 Young NAOE Open Talk for undergraduate and graduate students in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering, the talent pool that will be leading Korea’s shipbuilding and marine industry in the future. Presided by Business Director Han Koo Jeong, the talk inspired hope and an enterprising can-do spirit in students. In particular, HR managers and promising young employees at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and the Korean Register were present at the event, answering student questions about employment and work life.

2.2 General Meeting
The 50th Regular General Meeting was chaired by the General Affairs Director Kookhyun Kim. President Dae-Seung Cho presented a report of SNAK activities, including updates on members, member companies, and branches, committee and research committee activities, and international exchanges. In particular, Professor Hyun Soo Kim (currently General Affairs Director) was elected to be the next President of SNAK after receiving the majority vote in the election for the post that took place from July 1 to 15. In his speech, President-elect Hyun Soo Kim expressed his ambition to establish a communicative space between member groups and companies affiliated with SNAK, and to raise the status of SNAK in keeping with Korea’s status as the world’s top-ranking nation in the shipbuilding and marine industry. Moreover, No-Jun Park (Managing Director, Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction) and Yong-Jin Cho (Professor, Dong-eui University) were nominated by the Auditor Nomination Committee and were elected as auditors. This was followed by the 2019 Society Award and Special Prize Ceremony, the 28th National Student Ship Design Contest Award Ceremony, and the KTTC Experimental Hydrodynamics Contest Presidential Award Ceremony. Next, there were reports on society proceedings, undertakings, and finances. Then the planned projects and budget for the year 2020 were presented, reviewed, and received the approval of society members.

SNAK would like to thank our member groups and companies, as well as their representatives, for supporting the conference even under difficult circumstances, along with students from Changwon National University and Pusan National University who have worked hard to ensure that the 2019 General Meeting and Annual Autumn Academic Conference would be a success.
